Backstory

One of my most vivid memories as a child was walking into my Dad’s office and seeing a British army pencil that had “Be the best” written on it. My father was a military man in a past life, so I wanted to walk in his footsteps from the beginning. High standards became the baseline.

My early life goals and visions of myself were structured around philanthropy and serving humanity, which lead me to the work I do today. ChatGPT describes me as a polymath, but that sounds a bit overwhelming for me - I’m a self-proclaimed nerd, I love to read, understand and implement new tech, just curious about the world we live in. Being a risk-taker this has also historically led to some “rekt” moments (damn-you crypto!)

Effective Altruism plays a huge part in my work journey. This is the stuff that pushes me through to achieving and maintaining high standards when all else feels it’s falling apart.

I’ve never had a “monumental, unicorn-esque” business success either, in all honesty. Running a baby e-commerce startup from my bedroom was my first exposure to venture and I quickly learnt that there’s only so far you can go with £200/month as a business owner. When I received the validation of someone acquiring the entire company, it occurred to me that I may be working in my “Zone of Genius”.

My time at Y-combinator’s Beijing office was super insightful. That’s when it dawned on me that I wanted to create a capital advantage for tenacious founders who were wrestling with the funding part and couldn’t quite get the narrative right.

Financial success is a great aesthetic to have, and one might argue it’s perhaps a must in the modern world to be taken seriously and to create change and influence. But what gets me out of bed in the morning is the deeper mission of creating more economic equality.

I’ve afforded myself the freedom to achieve this goal somehow in some way, and at this early on in my career, the road is long and still opaque. My North Star is ultimately to create balance and ease people’s difficulty and if I can move that needle even 0.001%, then for me… it was a life well spent.

On the lookout for

True, sincere collaborators. Tenacious folks, high EQ (a more valuable currency to accrue when IQ is feeling commoditised) and ultimately agreeable executives.

You can of course disagree agreeably…

I’m open to all industries and sectors but on a deeper level we’re looking for firms that are re-envisioning the human experience.

I cast a super wide net in the beginning to try to get reference points for good quality/vs bad quality founders. When I first met one of our early successful founders, I saw first-hand her in-depth grasp of her business economics and it was clear to me that this was a founder who was set to intelligently win market-share.

I look for humble genius, and aggressive output. The humble part is crucial, because without it, you just walk around upsetting the world and that’s not a good look for anybody never mind becoming successful when going from zero to one.

I also love to see serious domain expertise. If someone has that covered, coupled with the aggressive output, the odds are they’ll find a way to make it work, someway, somehow.

My goal here is to be someone that founders can trust for sincere, authentic and beneficial guidance.
