AI Boom: Designated Survivors, Likely Survivors And Casualties

November 7, 2025

The 90s were wild, a century shrouded in world wars and nuclear mist, finally taking its last breath.

And yet venture capital flowed like the Nile does in the summer, a time where the internet was new, magical and promising.

Everyone believed that the websites would change the world, entrepreneurs became millionaires by launching websites, the focus shifted from profit to growth to market shares.

When the 21st century began, companies reached $1 billion valuation without even generating revenue, and then came the inevitable; the bubble burst, many “dot coms” ran out of money, followed by the stock markets crash, legendary brands went bankrupt overnight.

But when the dust settled, a few chosen survivors came on top and led the quiet revolution into the new era of internet browsing.

The dotcom phenomenon taught investors and founders that business fundamentals carried the heaviest weight and that the internet era wasn’t over; it was metamorphosizing into a better form.

As we advance further into this century, Artificial intelligence has taken over the globe in an unprecedented manner, it’s like a piece of grandma’s favorite pie, everyone wants a taste.

As time has shown again and again; (This, too, shall pass), the question is who will come out of the ruins and who will perish?

The Chosen Few

Major tech giants like Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Meta, and Apple, are globally acknowledged as "essentially unassailable" due to their deep pockets, core business profitability, and continued massive investment (over $320 billion annual capital expenditure in 2025) in AI and cloud infrastructure.

They can survive periods of disappointing AI returns and absorb slower adoption cycles without existential risk.

The Start-ups in Limbo

AI unicorns like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Scale AI, face much more uncertainty as they rely on sustained market demand, clear unit economics, and the ability to compete against both the hyper scalers with their enormous resources and lower-cost international competitors.

The next 18–24 months will be pivotal and decide the future of these high-valuation startups.

The Mass Casualties

Smaller AI startups are likely to get the short end of the stick, as shutdowns rise, funding declines, and companies abandon experiments that don’t deliver solid ROI (return on investment), a phenomenon already unfolding in 2025.

Final thoughts

Every major technological wave starts with excitement, picks up speed through speculation, and settles into long-lasting change. History tends to repeat itself. The AI boom is no exception.

The real survivors will be those who build with purpose, foresight, and resilience, while many will follow trends and get lost in the shuffle.

We at Neurobay see past the prevailing hype.
Our goal is to help investors, founders, and innovators navigate this changing environment by assisting them in spotting true value, creating long-term plans, and scaling wisely. Because those who are forward-thinking survive every revolution, not the loudest.
