How A Walk in Harvard Square Changed Venture Capital for Good: A Y Combinator’s Tale

January 22, 2026

There was a time in Silicon Valley, when the venture capital landscape only welcomed a selected few people with strong backgrounds.

Being a fresh founder with a brilliant idea and work ethic wasn’t enough - you needed to know people who knew people who mattered.

In the meantime, a self-proclaimed nerd at Cornell was learning philosophy and fine arts.

As years went by, Paul Graham decided it was time to chase more realistic pursuits, he turned to programming – an art within itself.

He went on to write several books that became Bibles for functional programming fans.

In 1995, after a startup he bootstrapped was liquidated, he started writing about the gatekeeping ecosystem of the VC world, constantly criticizing the policies and politics of it all.

As fate would have it, on an after-dinner walk with his wife, Jessica Levingston, the couple decided to hatch the idea of YC as an Angel learning lab.

Launched in 2005 as a radical experiment in startup funding, YC founders Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Robert Morris, and Trevor Blackwell challenged the gatekept VC world.

Betting small sums on many founders, YC offered $120,000 for 7% equity to anyone with grit, without asking for resumes.

Applications hit 15,000 per batch, with 1% acceptance fueling diversity.
This opened doors globally. YC expanded batches to four yearly, backing over 5,300 companies worth $800 billion.
The SAFE note was created in 2013, which streamlined seed deals, exchanging complex prefs for simple equity conversion. Everyone adopted it, cutting legal fees and founder dilution.
Today, YC's alumni network powers 93% of returns from unicorns. Pivots are normalized that succeed through a combination of peer advice and networking.

In time, VC adapted the YC's motto, “there’s room for everyone at this table.”

Global funding hit $580 billion in 2021, with early bets dominating. Accelerators exploded with YC leading through its multiple network layers.
YC cemented the belief surrounding the Power Law - fund hundreds, harvest outliers. It reclaimed its founder agency, standardized tools, and globalized tech.

Today, VCs all around the world chase YC stamps, the culture of helping that Paul and his cofounders started, rewrote history, gave wings to new founders and changed the VC world for good.
At Neurobay, we echo Y Combinator's revolutionary chant: VC belongs everywhere, not just Silicon Valley enclaves.
We empower founders to unlock their full potential with relentless support, hands-on guidance, and lifelong mentorship - fueling grit into global scale.
